Blues Night in Bishkek

Two thoughts here:

1. Couchsurfing is still a great way to know both people and place.

2. Sometimes a place you think you sort of know throws something at you which you completely don’t expect.

Bishkek’s blues bar.

The intersection of these two thoughts? Blues night. When I set up a meeting with a Couchsurfer (Almaz) one evening in Bishkek, he invited me to a local blues night but failed to mention that he was actually IN THE BAND. I arrived with a couple of travelers from my guesthouse, at the beginning of one of those nights where you walk in saying “One drink, then we’re leaving.”

This was the only shot I got from here where the floor was empty enough that you could actually see the band.

Something about the scene, though, kept us there until late in the night. Towards the end the other guy from the guesthouse, a really intelligent Brit named Ben, even jumped on the saxophone and started playing.

Ben playing sax for the first time in months.

One of those nights, somehow, where good company comes together with a positive crowd and a dynamic atmosphere to just all work out perfectly.

Blues night is just one of the many reasons I’m excited to be living in Bishkek!

This video, from a follow-up visit with Maki and Kent, is courtesy of the Dromomaniac himself. Goes to show, Bishkek continues being awesome.
