Bohol Island – Home to Terrifying Alien Monkeys and More!

Bohol Island

hiking in bohol

Jungle-living fantasies play out on a large scale on Bohol Island.  Staying in river-side huts that are more easily accessed by bamboo-seat boats than they are by any form of land transportation.  Climbing the mountain (well… mountain is perhaps a strong words here) up to the Giant Cross that overlooks the town.  An offbeat motorcycle tour in Asia of course involves travel through jungle roads where the woods are only interrupted by farmland and villages.  Getting lost on a “road” going from one town to another, crashing, and having no recourse but to wash off with the Nalgene and keep going until a better option presents itself.  Finally coming back to the highway, and convincing the local church’s priest to let me clean the wound and helping me fix the bent bike. Eventually making it to the original destination, and take a minute-long zipline over a river canyon with nothing but wilderness to be seen all around.  Racing back home before sunset because, quelle surprise, the headlights don’t work! Excitement and adventure and independence, all the things I want out of independent travel!

Terrifying little alien monkeys.

The next day, undaunted, on the bike again circling the closest island to find a good dive shop.  Stopping every once in a while to check out Spanish churches, and the terrifying-looking native monkeys, the second smallest primate in the world.
This is why I came to this place, and also why I’m having trouble convincing myself to leave.

(Dont worry, I came out of the bike fall with nothing but some surface scratches and an unhappy disposition.)
