Photo Slideshow: Vienna, Austria

I was pleasantly surprised by Vienna, and how pleasantly enjoyable a city it was. I went in with the mindset of “get visas (for Central Asia) and then get out”, which can sometimes be a dangerous thing. I could have easily gotten tired of the place, felt a little aimless. Instead, though, I found myself … Continue reading »

Gettin’ Schloss-ed in Vienna

Fact: America doesn’t have nearly enough sweet castles. Vienna’s Schloss Shonbrunn, just outside the city center, makes for an awesome pretty-day excursion in the city. Arches, palatial rooms, well-situated cafes/beer gardens, and one of the oldest zoos anywhere. Take some time to visit if you’re ever in town. See what we’re missing, America? Kindly remember, though: Inside … Continue reading »

Death, Fame, and Beauty in Vienna

I know this a bit weird, but I really like visiting cemeteries. Something about the monumental aspects of them, the air of quiet contemplation, and the bounteous living greenness of a space devoted to death all appeal to me. In Vienna, then, how could I avoid the two historic cemeteries (Vienna Central Cemetery and St. … Continue reading »

Old Town, Old World

There are places in the world with UNESCO status that make me think “Whaaaaat? Who’d they bribe to get that?!” Old Town Vienna, though, is definitely NOT on that list. The parts I enjoyed most were many of the civic buildings, away from the tourist madness of St. Stephen’s Church. Where you wander in the … Continue reading »

Headed for Heurigen

One of my favorite days in Vienna did not, technically speaking, take place in Vienna. The village of Grinzing, though, is where Viennese go to get their rowdy summer on. Grinzing is the wine-growing (and –drinking) rural region of Austria just outside of Vienna. City busses even go there from just off the Viennese metro. … Continue reading »

Hundertwasser Museum Vienna

Hundertwasser Museum Vienna This is where I visited that temporary exhibition on political propaganda through the ages. That exhibition was fascinating, with a vast range of object of art on show. Also interesting (and something I was actually unprepared for) were the exhibits of Hundertwasser’s own work. The man worked across media and  even across … Continue reading »

Propaganda and Art and Pop Culture

I made a lot of time for museums in Vienna, but my first still sticks out as a clear favorite. The KunstHaus and its permanent exhibition are worth a discussion on their own, but the temporary Political Imagery exhibit blew me away. I really enjoy propaganda in particular, trying to figure out what the cultural … Continue reading »
