Hundertwasser Museum Vienna

Hundertwasser Museum Vienna

This is where I visited that temporary exhibition on political propaganda through the ages. That exhibition was fascinating, with a vast range of object of art on show. Also interesting (and something I was actually unprepared for) were the exhibits of Hundertwasser’s own work. The man worked across media and  even across cultures, having grown up in Austria yet spending much of his life in New Zealand. He had an interesting personal history, and part of this is reflected both in the work displayed here and in the building projects he designed throughout the city of Vienna. The housing block he created is just down the street from the museum (ask museum staff to point the way), and while there you can also check out a map of his other projects within the city.

The Hundertwasser Museum is itself also worth your time. Though a bit of a walk from the nearest metro line, the permanent exhibit and rotating collections are both top notch. There are trams quite close at Radetzkyplatz as well, or you could easily bike here from the city center. Aside from the exhibitions inside, even the building itself is a bit whimsical and worth having a look at. The on-site café was a bit expensive (and staff a bit more surly than seemed warranted), so maybe give that a miss. Even if the exhibits don’t appeal, though, at least come in for a look at the building!

Crazy angles and colors are just the external appeal of the Hundertwasser Museum in Vienna. Wait till you get inside!

If you’ve made time to visit the Hundertwasser Museum, then definitely don’t miss the Hundertwasser House a quick ten minute walk away. This is a private lived-in apartment complex, so you won’t have quite the same freedom to explore as at the museum, but it’s another fascinating quirky piece of architecture that you won’t want to miss.

  1. Hundertwasser is one of my favorite artists! I would definitely love to pay a visit to the museum in Vienna.

    • It was a really cool place, and the guys from my hostel that I went with really enjoyed it as well. There is also an apartment building in Vienna that Hundertwasser designed as well, which you may want to try to find.
