Loutro from the trail above town.

Unreachable by road, tucked into a natural bay in the mountains of Southern Crete, and topped by two castles (Ottoman and Venetian) AND a little tower. That’s Loutro.

Having walked for a week or more to get here, Loutro was an excellent resting point from hiking on the E4 trail. Bright white buildings, fresh cooked food, and a small beachfront just at the foot of town make Loutro a wonderful little place.

Loutro’s beachfront.

I didn’t stay long, of course, with camp in the fort above town and the trail calling me away in both directions down the coast. I made it back through here twice, though, and both time had one thought: I need to make it back here with somebody special.

Leaving town on the ferry to Agia Roumeli.

So grab your girlfriend, buy a ferry ticket, and come see this bright light on the southern coast of Crete. I promise, it’ll make a great date.
