Budgeting Mongolia Travel Tips

Travel Budget: Mongolia

Mongolia ended up being far far less expensive than I expected before I went. Even while doing awesome stuff like renting a van for 10 days/ horse trekking around Khovsgol Lake/ outfitting all of your adventures with enough food to last the whole time, Mongolia didn’t cost much more than a mid-range country in South East Asia. If only the food in Ulan Baatar wasn’t so refreshingly delicious after days in the wilderness, it could have been even cheaper!

Importantly, here, it was usually pretty easy to find other travelers to team up with and share costs. For my Gobi trip I managed to pull together 6 people within two days of arriving in Mongolia, and leave on the third. For the Khovsgol horse thing 3 of us headed up from UB, and picked up an extra on the way. Trip planning probably worked more fluidly in Mongolia than just about any country I’ve ever been to.

  1. Hello

Planning on going to Mongolia 16th-1st August. Travelling via Beijing and alone (I am female). How easy will it be to just rock up and sort myself out? I have done that while travelling most of SE Asia, but I feel Mongolia might be a bit more obscure. Also I am on a really tight budget, basically would love to head out with the tribes on horse back, but any tour websites seem to cost a lot of cash. Sure when I am there is can source something?

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Niamh

  2. Hi thee, who did you organize your trips with? Heading to mongolia soon and looking to do somthing pretty similar. those trips seem pretty cheap.

    • Most of the guesthouses can organize trips. Best bet for saving money is to pull together as many other travelers as you can find, and then ask around at the different guesthouses to see who can give you the best price for the trip you want.
