Warm in the Waters of Micronesia

Yap underwater is not just about the Manta Ray, fortunately. With days of snorkeling from my beach camp and diving with Beyond the Reef I was lucky to spot a pretty healthy variety of species, which speaks more to Yap’s marine diversity than it does to me powers of perception. I was no more than 10 feet away from my first stingray before I spotted it (and visions of Steve Irwin danced in his head…). On my very first dive (at a site called Vertigo… how many wall dives across the world share that name?), the boat itself attracted a handful of black-tip and white-tip reef sharks, apparently used to gorging on food waste from the dive shops when no customers are around. Of course, all sorts of colorful little fish swimming in and out of coral formations.

I tried to be somewhat selective of the pictures I included, but this slideshow shows most of my favorite shots from the Micronesian waters of Yap.

Headed to Yap and unsure where to stay in Colonia? The best dive resort/hotel combo seemed to be Yap Pacific Resort, but spend some time searching and you can find other options as well.
