In so many places, new and exciting foods are some of the most tangibly exotic parts of being in a new culture. Xinjiang is no exception to this, and this time around I’ve managed to photograph some of the more exciting elements. Unfortunately, I apparently failed to get a picture of Laghmian. Perhaps next time.
So, with no further delay, a visual tour of Xinjiang cuisine.
Dessert, with different combinations of nuts held together by caramelized sugar.
Seen at the meat market. These were, in fact, for eating. Quite cheap, as well.
Making lamb kebabs. "Shashlyk" in most of Central Asia, apparently.Fresh bread everywhere. Stands, shops, individual hawkers. This lady was nice enough to pose for a photo.
Samsa! The best I can describe this is like a biscuit with a dab of meat and gravy baked inside. Delicious.And of course delicious pomegranates, a specialty of Kashgar.
